Amateurism

Student-athletes are amateurs, which means that they cannot:

  • Take any pay, or promise of pay, for competing in their sport
  • Agree (orally or in writing) to compete in professional athletics in their sport;
  • Compete on any professional athletics team (as defined by the NCAA) in that sport
  • Used their athletics skill for pay in any form in that sport.
  • Accept money, transportation or other benefits from an agent or agreed (writing or verbally) to have an agent market their athletic ability or reputation

Difference between an individual and a student-athlete:

Individual: is any person of any age without reference to enrollment in an educational institution or status as a student-athlete.

Student-athlete: An individual becomes a student-athlete when they participate in an intercollegiate squad practice or contest that is under the jurisdiction of the athletics department.
