Women's Soccer Bounces Back, Wins at Regis on Saturday, 3-1

WESTON, Mass. – After registering a tie and loss over its previous two fixtures, the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team bounced back and returned to the win column, defeating the Regis College Pride, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest held at Regis Stadium in Weston, Mass. With the triumph, the Blue Jays improve to 6-3-1 overall on the 2023 season and 6-1-1 in GNAC play, while the Pride drop to 4-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in league action with the setback.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Blue Jays struck first less than eight minutes into the contest when graduate student midfielder Elizabeth Garlock (Meriden, Conn.) earned her fifth goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Marisa Brough (Cheshire, Conn.).
  • The Pride threatened to tie the match four minutes later, but Regis' freshman forward Colleen Curran's (Woburn, Mass.) shot was turned away by USJ's freshman goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.).
  • In the 25th minute, the Blue Jays drew a foul within the 18-yard box for a penalty kick opportunity that junior midfielder Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) successfully converted for her seventh goal of the season.
  • Less than three minutes into the second half, USJ picked up its third goal of the day when freshman forward Samantha Sacco (Westerly, R.I.) earned her first goal of the season, with junior forward Kelsi Ursini (Groton, Conn.) collecting the assist. 
  • Within the final 10 minutes of the contest, the Pride pressured the Blue Jays' defense, taking several shots that were on target, but they were unable to elude Corcoran.
  • Eventually, Regis did break through with a goal when freshman forward Avary Hall (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) picked up a pass from Curran in the 88th minute and converted on a shot for her second goal of the season and to account for the 3-1 final margin.

NOTES

  • Despite the score line, the Pride ended up outshooting the Blue Jays overall in the contest, 15-8, including 8-5 in shots on goal.
  • Garlock and Zup paced USJ's offensive attack, finishing with a game, a pair of shots, and a pair of shots on goal.
  • Curran led all players with four total shots, including three shots on goal for the Pride.
  • Corcoran earned the win for the Blue Jays between the pipes to improve to 6-2-1 overall on the season. She ended up with seven saves against eight shots faced.
  • Regis' sophomore goalie Cassidy Van Cott (Santa Monica, Calif.) was credited with two saves in the loss.
