Women's Hoops Takes Down Lehman College, 74-46, Saturday Afternoon
BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team got back in the win column, defeating host Lehman College (Lehman), 74-46, in the consolation game of the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament Saturday afternoon inside The Apex in the Bronx, N.Y. Graduate student forward Jordan Ouellette (Bristol, Conn.) was named to the All-Tournament Team for USJ, averaging 23.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game for the tournament. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 5-5 on the season while the Lightning dropped to 5-5 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays jumped out to an early 6-3 lead at the 7:19 mark, receiving points from graduate student forwards Olivia Heslin (Plainville, Conn.) and Ouellette graduate student guard Taylor Verboven (Columbia, Conn.)
- USJ continued to dominate offensively, extending the gap to 10-3 after Ouellette knocked down a second-chance layup with 5:52 on the clock.
- Lehman put a stop to the Blue Jays run, but the visitors responded with a 13-6 stretch, fueled by nine points from senior guard Maya Slisz (New Britain, Conn.) to extend the advantage to 23-9 with 48 seconds left in the first. The score would hold entering the second quarter.
- Verboven would score five straight points to open the second, increasing the gap to 17 points, 28-11, with 7:01 left in the half.
- The Blue Jays continued to stifle the Lightning, allowing only four points in the entire second quarter as Ouellette knocked down three straight jumpers to close out the half, giving USJ a 38-13 edge at the break.
- USJ continued its strong start to the game to open the third, utilizing a 12-5 stretch, fueled by six points from Heslin, to establish a 50-18 edge with 6:08 on the clock.
- The Blue Jays would close out the third on an 8-2 stretch, capped off by a jumper at the buzzer by senior guard Jelly Frigo (West Hartford, Conn.), to hold a 64-29 lead entering the fourth.
- Lehman would outscore USJ in the fourth quarter, 17-10, but would not be able to mount a comeback as the Blue Jays secured the bounce-back victory, 74-46.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Ouellette paced the team with a game-high 20 points.
- Heslin dropped a career-high 14 points.
- Verboven notched a double-double, scoring 13 points and dishing out a career-high 10 assists.
- Slisz and freshman guard Nevaeh Yorke (Norwich, Conn.) swiped a team-best three steals each.
- Ouellette hauled in a team-high eight rebounds.
- USJ outshot Lehman 47.8 percent to 26.1 percent.
- The Blue Jays outrebounded the Lightning, 47-42.
