
Men's Tennis Sweeps Scranton, 7-0, During Season Opener
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) men's tennis team opened its 2024-25 campaign in an emphatic way, sweeping the University of Scranton, 7-0, in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. The Blue Jays won all three doubles matches before securing victory in all six singles matches, losing only one set in the process. With this result, the Blue Jays started their season 1-0, while the Royals began the year 0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays started the match strong at No. 3 doubles as junior Marko Karpyuk (Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine) and freshman Manuel Hernandez-Plaza (Dorado, Puerto Rico), won decisively, 6-0 against Nathan Harrison and Christopher Martinez.
- USJ's No. 1 doubles team of juniors Karol Romer (Warsaw, Poland) and Mateus Silvestre (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) won their first match as a duo, 6-2, beating Maxwell Dombrowski and Lucas Kotcho to secure the lone doubles point for USJ.
- The Blue Jays completed the doubles sweep at No. 2 doubles, as sophomores Christian Kaverud (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Rodrigo Torres (Lima, Peru), took down Scanrton's duo of Harrison Clark and Ethan Borwick, 6-3.
- Karpyuk continued his strong day at No. 6 singles, besting Harrison in straight sets, 6-2 6-2, extending USJ's advantage to 2-0
- Hernandez-Plaza, who slotted in at No. 3 singles, defeated Clark, 6-1 6-2 to conclude his perfect debut match, extending the lead 3-0.
- The momentum continued to roll for USJ at No. 1 singles as Romer, secured a 6-3 6-0 victory, securing his first singles win in a Blue Jays uniform and securing the victory for USJ.
- Torres maintained USJ's dominance, winning his match at No. 2 singles against Kotcho 6-3, 6-3.
- Shortly after, at No. 4 singles, Kaverud, won his match against Borwick, coming back after dropping the opening set to secure a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) victory, extending the gap to 6-0.
- Silvestre rounded out the perfect start to the year for USJ at No. 5 singles, snatching victory against Budrys in straight sets, 6-0 6-3.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return to action for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals on Friday, September 27. The three-day event, which takes play at the Voute Courts in Medford, Mass., begins at 9:00 a.m.
