Volleyball Drops Home GNAC Match Against Lasell Friday Night

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team fell at home against Lasell University (LU), 3-0, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Friday night inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays dropped to 2-17 overall and 2-7 in the conference, while the Lasers moved to 21-4 overall and 10-0 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lasers controlled the opening set from start to finish, winning the opener, 25-7.
  • Lasell jumped out to another quick lead in the second set, holding a 16-9 edge.
  • The Blue Jays would close the gap to four, 17-13, after a 4-1 stretch, featuring a pair of kills from senior outside hitter Rachel Heaney (Torrington, Conn.).
  • However, USJ would not get any closer, as Lasell took the second set, 25-16, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • After the Lasers established a 10-5 edge to start the third set, USJ would narrow the deficit to two, 13-11, after winners from sophomore outside hitter Shaye Harris (Prospect, Conn.) and freshman outsider hitter Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.).
  • The visitors though would not allow the hosts to get any closer, as Lasell won the final set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris paced the offense with nine kills.
  • Freshman setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.) dished out 15 assists.
  • Senior libero Fernanda Ayala Rodriguez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) recorded a team-best 11 digs.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays head back on the road for a GNAC match at intrastate foe Mitchell College on Tuesday, October 29. Opening serve against the Mariners inside the Yarnall Athletic Center in New London, Conn., is slated for 7:00 p.m.
