Volleyball Bested By Framingham State Tuesday Night

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team fell on the road to Framingham State University (FSU), 3-0, during non-conference play Tuesday night inside the FSU Athletic & Recreation Center in Framingham, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 2-14 overall while the Rams improve to 5-12 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Blue Jays grabbed an early 3-0 lead, the Rams responded with an 11-0 run, establishing an 11-3 edge.
  • USJ answered back, utilizing a 7-1 stretch, fueled by service aces by sophomore outside hitter Shaye Harris (Prospect, Conn.) and senior libero Fernanda Ayala Rodriguez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) to close the gap to two, 12-10.
  • The Blue Jays would pull even closer, cutting the gap to one, 13-12, after a FSU error, but the hosts controlled the remainder of the first set, winning the stanza, 25-19.
  • USJ fired back to open the second set, rushing out to an 8-3 lead after receiving kills from Ayala Rodriguez, Harris and junior outside hitter Bernae Webb (Bridgeport, Conn.).
  • However, the Rams would utilize a 5-0 stretch later in the set, tying the set at 12-12.
  • The two teams would trade points, until a 3-0 run, capped off by a service ace by Harris, swung the lead back in USJ's favor, 19-18.
  • FSU though would close the set on a 7-2 run, taking the second set, 25-21, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Rams would break open an advantage to open the third, holding a 12-5 edge.
  • The Blue Jays would pull back within four, 15-11, after back-to-back winners by Harris, but the visitors would not get any closer, as FSU held on for the 25-17 set win, and a 3-0 match victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Harris paced the team with 10 kills.
  • She also tallied 11 digs to record a double-double.
  • Ayala Rodriguez notched a team-high 18 digs.
  • Freshman setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.) dished out a team-best 15 assists.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays take an 11-day hiatus, returning to the court on Saturday, October 19 for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match at New England College. First serve against the Pilgrims inside Bridges Gym in Henniker, N.H., is slated for 1:00 p.m.
