Volleyball Bested at Home by Intrastate Foe Connecticut College

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team was bested at home by intrastate foe Connecticut College (CC), 3-0, Tuesday night inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays fell to 0-7 overall, while the Camels improved to 7-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Camels grabbed the early lead in the opening set, 8-3.
  • The Blue Jays pulled back within two, 8-6, after a service ace from junior outside hitter Tatianah Ziegler (Troy, N.Y.)
  • However, USJ would not be able to pull any closer, as CC ran away with a 25-12 opening set victory.
  • The Camels grabbed another early edge in set two, 5-0, but back-to-back service aces from senior outside hitter Rachel Heaney (Torrington, Conn.) saw USJ close the deficit to 5-3.
  • The visitors though began to establish an advantage, rushing out to a 17-9 edge.
  • The gap ultimately proved too great, as CC won set two, 25-14, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • The Camels continued its momentum in set three, winning the set, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.

NOTES 

  • Heaney paced the team with seven kills and seven digs.
  • Freshman setter Gabi Wanner (Southinton, Conn.) dished out a team-best 14 assists.
  • Sophomore libero Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) also tallied a team-best seven digs.
  • Zieger and Heaney notched two service aces each to pace the Blue Jays.
  • The Camels outhit the Blue Jays .376 percent to .031 percent.
  • With the result, the Camels remain undefeated all-time against USJ, moving to 3-0.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Friday, September 20, heading to Northfield, Vt., to face Norwich University. Opening serve against the Cadets inside Andrews Hall is slated for 6:00 p.m.
