
Volleyball Suffers Loss on the Road to Westfield State Wednesday Night
WESTFIELD, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team fell on the road to Westfield State University (WSU), 3-0, during non-conference play Wednesday night inside the Woodward Center in Westfield, Mass. The Owls won the match by scores of 25-13, 25-6, and 25-15. With the result, the Blue Jays fall to 0-5 on the year, while the Owls move to 2-4.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Blue Jays utilized a spread-out offensive attack to open the first set, as sophomore outside hitter Shaye Harris (Prospect, Conn.), sophomore middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.) and senior outside hitter Rachel Heaney (Torrington, Conn.) all recorded kills to establish a 5-4 USJ lead.
- However, the Owls secured eight of the next ten points to take a 12-7 advantage.
- USJ would stay within four points after a WSU attack error, 13-9, but the hosts controlled the remainder of the set, winning, 25-13.
- The Owls carried the momentum into set two, securing a 25-6 set victory. Harris and Heaney both notched kills during the set.
- USJ did not let the previous stanza effect them, rushing out to a 9-2 lead, after stellar serving from freshman outsider hitter Ericka Pryz (Amityville, N.Y.) and freshman setter Gabi Wanner (Southington, Conn.).
- However, WSU quickly rattled off eight straight points to take a slim 10-9 edge.
- The rally proved to be the turning point in the set, as the Blue Jays could not regain its early momentum and the hosts secured the match victory with a 25-15 win in set three.

- The Owls outhit the Blue Jays, .301 percent to negative .012 percent.

The Blue Jays wrap up a three-game road trip by opening Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday, September 14 at Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Opening serve against the Monks inside the Harold Alfond Center in Standish, Maine, is slated for noon.
