Volleyball Falls on the Road at Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team fell on the road at intrastate foe Connecticut College (Connecticut), 3-0, Wednesday night inside Luce Field House in New London, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays drop to 0-9 on the season while the Camels move to 3-2.

KEY MOMENTS 

  • After the Camels opened the match with a 3-1 run, USJ responded back with a 4-0 stretch, featuring a kill from freshman middle blocker Vivian Pawloski (Wallingford, Conn.) and an ace from sophomore setter Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.), to take a 5-3 lead.
  • Connecticut would respond with an 8-1 run of their own, forcing USJ to call a timeout down 11-6.
  • USJ would continue to fight back in the set, pulling back within four, 13-9 after a kill by junior outside hitter Rachel Heaney (Torrington, Conn.), but the hosts would not let USJ get any closer as the Camels took the opening set, 25-13.
  • Connecticut dominated the second set, jumping out to a 20-3 lead.
  • The Blue Jays would begin to mount a comeback, utilizing a 6-0 run that featured a pair of kills by freshman middle blocker Sofia Weiss (Babylon, N.Y.), but the early deficit proved too much as Connecticut won the second set, 25-12, to establish a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • USJ bounced back to begin the third set, taking an early 5-2 edge after solid serving from Long.
  • The Camels though would tie the match at 6-6, before using a 6-0 stretch to take a 12-7 edge.
  • Senior outside hitter Claire Quinn (Canton, Mass.) put an end to the run to pull USJ back within four, 12-8, but Connecticut would increase the gap to eight, 18-10.
  • The Camels continued to keep the Blue Jays at bay, securing the third set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.

NOTES 

  • Heaney paced the USJ offense with eight kills.
  • Long dished out six assists while senior libero Fernanda Ayala Rodriguez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) racked up eight digs.
  • The Camels outhit the Blue Jays .351 percent to .015 percent.
  • With the result the Camels increase its edge in the all-time series to 18-2-1.
