Volleyball Falls On The Road At Elms Wednesday Night

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) volleyball team fell on the road, 3-0, to the Elms College Blazers in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Wednesday night.

KEY MOMENTS

  • After taking an early 2-0 lead in the opening set, the Blazers responded with a 5-0 run, taking a 5-2 lead and forcing a USJ timeout.
  • Nicole Albert (Meriden, Conn.) would come up with a timely kill, while an Elms error cut the gap to one, 7-6.
  • However, Elms would start to pull away, taking a 19-12 lead to make the Blue Jays call timeout.
  • The lead would be too much to overcome as the Blazers took the first set, 25-14.
  • Elms would build a 7-1 lead to start the second set forcing a USJ timeout.
  • After a Rachel Heaney (Torrington, Conn.) kill brought the score to 8-2, the Blazers quickly called for a timeout of their own.
  • The Blue Jays would continue to fight back, using a 5-2 stretch, capped off by an Albert Kill, to pull within five, 14-9.
  • Elms would use a 4-1 run of their own though, extending their advantage to 18-10 and having USJ call timeout.
  • USJ would fight back, mounting a four-point rally featuring kills from Shannon Carey (Bayport, N.Y.) and Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.), but Elms would hold on to win the second set, 25-16.
  • The Blazers would use another early run in the third set, taking an 8-2 edge and causing the Blue Jays to call for time.
  • With Elms starting to pull away, a kill from Heaney followed by a Long service Ace, brought the Blue jays back within single digits, 18-10.
  • USJ would not go down easy, using kills from Hannah Benson (Terryville, Conn.) and Jezarae Ortega (East Hartford, Conn.) and an ace by Carey to mount another late comeback, pulling within six, 24-18
  • However, the hosts would collect the final point, taking the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.

NOTES

  • Benson, Carey and Heaney paced the team with four kills each.
  • Rabassa tallied a team-high 18 digs, marking the 12th match this season she recorded double-digits in the category.
  • Carey finished with a team-high six assists.
  • Elms increased its winning streak over to USJ to five matches.
