Volleyball Wins Fourth Straight, Bests Vikings In Straight Sets

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team made it four straight victories, picking up another win in straight sets, 3-0, this time over the Vikings of Salem State University (SSU) in a non-conference match inside the O'Connell Center Tuesday night.

The Blue Jays maintained a five to seven point lead in the first set, not allowing Salem State to put a run together. Solid teamwork was really the driving force in this one, as several players were able to get involved from the home team to widen the gap from the visitors. Senior outside hitter and captain Hannah Benson (Terryville, Conn.) led the charge as USJ took a tight 25-20 first set. With the help of junior libero Julia MacKenzie (Wallingford, Conn.), who had a game-high 24 digs, the Blue Jays dominated the next two sets (25-9, 25-12) to claim their second-straight sweep. Junior middle hitter Shannon Carey (Bayport, N.Y.) had 10 kills on the night, while Benson led the way with 13. Sophomore setter Fernanda Ayala Rodriguez (Puerto Rico) had 23 assists and eight digs to aid the Blue Jays.
