Volleyball Splits Tri-Match Saturday, Earns First GNAC Victory

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday with Regis College (REG) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine (SJC) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home tri-match inside the O'Connell Athletic Center.

In game one, the Pride came out firing on all cylinders, but the Blue Jays refused to go down without a fight, as the first set was played to 30 points, with Regis just narrowly escaping in a 30-28 win. USJ was admirable in its competitiveness in sets two and three, but dropped both, 25-18, as Regis claimed a 3-0 win.

In game two, both teams traded points like a prize fight, as the Monks took set one, 25-20. The Blue Jays bounced back with a 25-14 set-two win, then took their first overall lead of the day with a third-set triumph. After a SJC fourth-set win, it all came down to the fifth set. The Monks took an early 4-1 lead, but USJ rallied to finish on a 15-10 run to take the victory. Senior outside hitter Hannah Benson (Terryville, Conn.) claimed match point with an impressive kill from junior setter Nicole Albert (Meriden, Conn.). Benson had 11 kills, while junior middle hitter Shannon Carey (Bayport, N.Y.) had another stat-filled afternoon, connecting on a game-high 23 kills in the victory. Carey finished with an impressive 36 total kills on the day.
