Volleyball Suffers GNAC Tri-Match Defeat Saturday

NEWTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) Volleyball Team dropped two matches Saturday to Colby-Sawyer College (CSC) and Lasell University (LU), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) road tri-match inside the Lasell Athletic Center.

In game one, the Chargers raced out to a quick start in search of their first conference win of the season. They won the first two sets, 25-7. The Blue Jays battled back in the third set, and trailed by just one, 21-20, but CSC scored four of the next five points to close it out, and complete the match in a sweep.

In game two, USJ hung tough throughout, but the Lasers were just too strong overall, claiming the match in straight sets. Saint Joseph could keep it close hrough the first half of a set, but Lasell picked up the pace in the middle portion of all three sets to take the win.

Score: Colby-Sawyer 3, Saint Joseph 0
Set Scores: 7-25, 7-25, 21-25
Records: USJ 3-7 (0-4 GNAC), CSC 6-10 (1-2 GNAC)

Score: Saint Joseph 0, Lasell 3
Set Scores: 16-25, 18-25, 19-25
Records: USJ 3-8 (0-5 GNAC), LU 8-5 (2-1 GNAC)

GAME NOTES

  • Junior middle hitter Shannon Carey (Bayport, N.Y.) led the way for USJ with 15 kills on the day, including nine in game two.
  • Second of five GNAC Tri-Matches this season.
  • USJ had just five errors through two sets of game two despite the loss. They had eight errors in the third set.

NUMBER TO KNOW

25 – The Blue Jays are 3-1 this season when recording at least 25 kills. They are 0-7 when they don't.

USJ will be back in action in one week's time in another GNAC tri-match, this time against Emmanuel and Johnson & Wales on Saturday, October 9 at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. respectively, on the campus of Johnson & Wales in Providence, R.I.
