Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Colby-Sawyer Saturday

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's volleyball team split a tri-match on Saturday afternoon falling in the opener to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Colby-Sawyer College (CSC), 3-1, before rebounding with a clutch, 3-0, sweep in the second match over the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI). The Chargers also won their final match of the day to give them the sweep on the day in their home tri-match as they improve to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the GNAC. USJ moves to 3-4 and 0-1 with the split, while UMPI dips to 0-6 on the year.

Game One

Colby-Sawyer senior Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) led all players with 12 kills. She added five blocks. Senior Rebecca Straubel (Altamont, N.Y.) tallied a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Anna Allen (Los Angeles, Calif.) also had a double-double of 36 assists and 13 digs. First-year Olivia Werner (Williston, Vt.) was third on the team with seven kills. Senior Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) had a team best 16 digs.

The Blue Jays were led by freshman Shannon Carey (Bayport, N.Y.). She had nine kills, five blocks and five digs. Junior Amniah Tsonga (Plainville, Conn.) recorded eight kills and a match best 18 digs. Sophomore Nina Lestrud (Torrington, Conn.) finished with a match high five aces. Freshman setter Nyah Young (Swansea, Mass.) finished with 27 assists.

The Blue Jays were led by Tsonga's 14 kills on a .448 hitting percentage. She added 13 digs and five aces. Shannon Carey added 13 kills, while freshman libero Natalia Rabassa (Juana Diaz, P.R.) picked up a match best 22 digs. Young finished with 27 assists.

UMPI received eight kills from Taylor Miller. Maddi Thweatt and Ashlon Stroub contributed six kills apiece. Thweatt led the team with 16 digs. Madison Exferd registered 21 assists and seven digs.

USJ is back on the court next at home on Wednesday versus Nichols. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. between the Blue Jays and Bison.
