Stellar Singles Matches Lift Women's Tennis Past Salve Regina, 4-3

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team used stellar performances in singles matches to comeback and defeat Salve Regina University (SRU), 4-3, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. The victory marks the first time in program history that the Blue Jays have defeated the Seahawks. With the result the Blue Jays improve to 9-4 on the year, while the Seahawks dropped to 2-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.), earned victory at No. 1 doubles, defeating Stephanie Davis and Kaydin Pinto, 6-4. 
  • The Seahawks would win at No. 2 doubles, as freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) fell to Madigan Murphy and Sadie Rieg, 6-3.
  • SRU also found victory at No. 3 doubles, as junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) dropped a 6-1 decision to Natalie Barros and Cayla Dolan as the visitors would take lone doubles point and establish a 1-0 lead.
  • The Seahawks increased the gap to 2-0 after No. 5 singles, as Rieg defeated junior Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.) in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
  • Sirisavath pulled one back for USJ at No. 3 singles, besting Murphy in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to close the deficit to 2-1.
  • Santoro tied the match at 2-2 after No. 1 singles, winning a thrilling contest over Davis, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-3).
  • SRU would regain to edge at No. 6 singles, as Sloane Nelson defeated freshman Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.), 6-2, 6-4.
  • Garcia would keep the Blue Jays alive at No. 4 singles, picking up a crucial win over Barros, 6-4, 6-4, to tie the match at 3-3.
  • With No. 2 singles now serving as the winner-take-all match, Rossetti came up clutch, defeating Pinto in the standout match of the day, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) to secure the match win for USJ, 4-3.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays begin the 2024 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Playoffs on Saturday, October 12, hosting No. 3 seed Simmons University in the semifinals. First serve against the Sharks at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex is slated for 12:00 p.m.
