Women's Tennis Falls to Colby-Sawyer in GNAC Finale

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team dropped its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) finale to Colby-Sawyer College (CSC), 8-1, Saturday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. As a result of the match, the Blue Jays will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming GNAC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, hosting No. 3 seed Simmons University for the semifinals on Saturday, October 12. With the result against Colby-Sawyer, the Blue Jays dropped to 8-4 on the year and 3-1 in the GNAC, while the Chargers moved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CSC saw victory at No. 1 doubles as the team of Elise Hogan and Sky Jara bested USJ's pair of graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.), 8-4. 
  • The Chargers also won at No. 2 doubles, as freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) fell to Isabella Gutierrez Avendaño and Maria Espinosa Lopez, 8-3.
  • The visitors completed the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles, taking a 3-0 lead in the match after graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) were defeated by Payton Dugan and Avery Nielsen, 8-3.
  • CSC increased the deficit to 4-0 after No. 5 singles, as Hardy was bested by Nielsen, 6-1, 6-1.
  • The Chargers secured the match victory at No. 6 singles after USJ junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) fell to Mei Genest, 6-0, 6-0.
  • The gap grew to 6-0 after No. 1 singles, as CSC's Dugan defeated Santoro, 6-2, 6-2
  • The Chargers increased the deficit to 7-0 with a win at No. 4 singles, as Garcia was bested by Gutierrez Avendaño, 6-1, 6-2.
  • CSC also found victory at No. 3 singles, as Sirisavath battled, but fell in straight sets to Hogan, 7-6, 6-4.
  • Rossetti prevented the match sweep at No. 2 singles, fighting back after dropping the opening set to secure a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3) victory.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays conclude the 2024 regular season with a non-conference match against Salve Regina University on Monday, October 7. Opening serve against the Seahawks at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex is set for 3:00 p.m.
