
Women's Tennis Falls on the Road to Rhode Island College
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team saw its five match winning streak snapped Thursday afternoon, dropping a non-conference match to Rhode Island College (RIC), 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Center in Providence, R.I. With the result, the Blue Jays fell to 8-3 on the year while the Anchorwomen improved to 13-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The duo of freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) started the match for USJ at No. 2 doubles, falling to RIC's pair of Haylie Peacocks and Emilia Houwers, 6-4.
- The Anchorwomen secured the lone point awarded to doubles play at No. 3 doubles, as Amiah Sommer and Amara Devine bested sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.), 6-3.
- Graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) prevented a doubles sweep, securing victory at No. 1 doubles over Lauren Macera and Erica Botelho, 6-2. However, due to their victories at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, RIC held a 1-0 advantage in the match.
- Devine increased the deficit to 2-0 after No. 6 singles, defeating USJ junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.), 6-1, 6-1.
- The gap was extended to 3-0 in favor of RIC at No. 4 singles, as Peacock bested Garcia, 6-0, 6-0.
- The Anchorwomen secured the match victory at No. 3 singels, as Sirisavath was defeated by Arianna De Thomas, 6-2, 6-1.
- Sommer increased the gap to 5-0, winning against Hardy at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
- Rossetti got the Blue Jays on the board at No. 2 singles, continuing her impressive debut campaign, taking down Botelho in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
- Santoro rounded out the day with a victory at No. 1 singles, securing a 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) win against Macera, to limit the Anchorwomen to a 5-2 win.

The Blue Jays return to the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex for a GNAC showdown against Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, October 5. First serve against the Chargers is set for noon.
