
Women's Tennis Defeats Clark, Extends Winning Streak to Five
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches, defeating non-conference foes Clark University (Clark), 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays improved to 8-2 on the year while the Cougars dropped to 0-5. The win also marks the most wins in a single-season for the Blue Jays since the 2015 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays started the match strong at No. 3 doubles, as the team of graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) secured a 6-1 victory over the team of Emma Allen and Amy Marin.
- USJ secured the sole point awarded to doubles after the No. 1 doubles match, as graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) defeated Clarks' pair of Merielle Kane and Larkin Gardinier, 6-3.
- The Cougars would find victory at No. 2 doubles after Crisi Patel and Amanda Keith bested USJ's duo of freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 6-4, but it was the Blue Jays who entered the single's portion of the match with a 1-0 advantage.
- Sirisavath got revenge over Keith to open singles play at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to extend USJ's edge to 2-0.
- Rossetti continued her dominate debut season, picking up a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kane, increasing the Blue Jay's advantge to 3-0.
- Santoro clinched the match victory for USJ at No. 1 singles, also winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, over Gardinier, extending the gap to 4-0.
- The Cougars woudl not be shutout though, as Varvara Maltseva defeated freshman Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2, closing the deficit to 4-1.
- The Blue Jays would bounce back at No. 4 singles with a victory from Garcia, who bested Allen in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
- Sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) rounded out the day for USJ at No. 6 singles, picking up a thrilling comeback victory against Marin, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) to secure a 6-1 USJ victory.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays head on the road, heading to Providence, R.I., to face Rhode Island College on Thursday, October 3. Opening serve against the Anchorwomen at the RIC Tennis Complex is slated for 3:30 p.m.
