Women's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight, Sweeps WNE Monday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches, defeating non-conference foes Western New England University (WNE), 7-0, Monday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays improved to 7-2 on the year while the Golden Bears move to 2-7 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays started the match strong at No. 1 doubles, as the team of graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) defeated WNE's pair of Catie Seklecki and Sydney Shepard in convincing fashion, 6-0.
  • USJ then earned the sole point awarded for doubles during the No. 3 doubles match as graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) secured a 6-1 victory over Yasmine Giacalone and Kelsey Wyse, establishing a 1-0 lead in the match for USJ.
  • Freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) rounded out the doubles sweep at No. 2 doubles, taking down Emma Miller and Malina Dinis, 6-1.
  • Hardy rounded out her perfect day, opening up the singles portion of the match at No. 4 singles with a 6,-2, 6-0 straight set victory over Shepard, increasing the Blue Jays advantage to 2-0.
  • Rossetti quickly made it 3-0 for USJ after No. 2 singles, securing a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Seklecki.
  • Junior Gia Alvarez (Merdien, Conn.) secured the match victory for USJ at No. 5 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, against Gianna Arace, extending the gap to 4-0.
  • Junior Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.) increased the Blue Jays edge to 5-0, winning a hard fought match at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-4 against Kayla Ledoux.
  • Garcia maintained the Blue Jays' perfect day at No. 3 singles, securing a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dinis, moving the scoreline to 6-0 for USJ.
  • Santoro completed the sweep at No. 1 singles, winning a thrilling match against Miller after falling in the opening set, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9).

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays continue a five-match homestand on Thursday, September 26 against Salve Regina University. Opening serve at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex is set for 3:00 p.m.
