
Women's Tennis Sweeps Regis, Remains Perfect in GNAC Play
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team won its third straight match, sweeping Regis College (Regis), 9-0, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. The victory was the second conesuctive sweep for USJ and marked the fifth time that the Blue Jays swept an opponent this season. The win also saw the Blue Jays secure a home playoff match during the upcoming GNAC playoffs. With the result, the Blue Jays improved to 6-2 on the year and 3-0 in GNAC play, while the Pride fell to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays earned a default victory at No. 3 doubles, which was slated to be played by the pair of junior Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.).
- USJ picked up their first true victory of the day at No. 2 doubles, as the duo of sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) secured a 8-1 victory to extend the gap to 2-0.
- The Blue Jays completed the doubles sweep at No. 1 doubles, as the team of graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) notched an 8-2 win, sending the hosts into the singles portion of the match with a 3-0 edge.
- USJ increased the gap to 4-0 as Gardella won at No. 6 singles by default.
- The Blue Jays secured the match victory at No. 5 singles, as Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) won in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-0, to increase the gap to 5-0.
- Graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) made it 6-0 for USJ at No. 1 singles, also securing a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
- The Blue Jays continued to roll at No. 3 singles, as Garcia made it back-to-back-to-back 6-0, 6-0 victories for USJ, increasing the advantge to 7-0.
- Freshman Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) also won in straight sets without dropping a single match, 6-0, 6-0, extending the lead to 8-0.
- Freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) completed the sweep for USJ at No. 2 singles, winning via a 6-0, 6-3 decision, giving USJ a 9-0 victory.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays continue a five-match homestand on Monday, September 23, hosting non-conference foes Western New England. Opening serve at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex is set for 3:00 p.m.
