Women's Tennis Sweeps UMass Dartmouth, 7-0, at Home Monday Afternoon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team continued its winning way with a convincing 7-0 victory at home over non-conference foe UMass Dartmouth Monday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. The victory was the second in a row for USJ and marked the fourth time that the Blue Jays swept an opponent this season. With the result, the Blue Jays improved to 5-2 on the year, while the Corsairs were handed their first loss of the 2024-25 campaign, dropping to 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays earned a default victory at No. 3 doubles, which was slated to be played by the pair of graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.).
  • USJ secured the lone point awarded for doubles matches at No. 1 doubles, as graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) earned a convincing 6-1 victory.
  • The Blue Jays rounded out the doubles sweep at No. 2 doubles, as junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) battled, picking up up a hard fought 7-5 victory.
  • USJ increased the lead to 2-0 at No. 6 singles, as junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) picked up a win via default.
  • Junior Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.)  continued the Blue Jays' momentum at No. 5 singles, taking home a 6-2, 6-0, straight set victory, increasing the USJ advantage to 3-0.
  • The Blue Jays secured the match win at No. 4 singles when Hardy also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
  • Garcia closed out her strong day with a win at No. 3 singles, taking down her opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, increasing the Blue Jays edge to 5-0.
  • Rossetti also won in convincing fashion during singles action, securing victory at the No. 2 singles position with a 6-1, 6-2 win to establish a 6-0 USJ lead.
  • Santoro rounded out the sweep with a hard fought victory at No. 1 singles, coming back after dropping the openign set to win, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6).

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays continue a five-match homestand, welcoming Regis College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match on Saturday, Septemeber 21. Opening serve at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex against the Pride is scheduled for noon.
