Women's Tennis Takes Down Simmons, 5-4, Clinches Spot in GNAC Playoffs
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team got back in the win column, clinching a spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) playoffs after defeating Simmons University (Simmons) in thrilling fashion, 5-4, during GNAC play Saturday afternoon at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Blue Jays won two doubles matches, before winning three singles contests. With the result, the Blue Jays improve to 4-2 on the year and 2-0 in GNAC play while the Sharks drop to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays started the match strong, picking up a victory at No. 2 doubles, as junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) secured an 8-3 win.
- USJ's duo of graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) continued the momentum at No. 3 doubles, winning 8-3 to extend the USJ advantage to 2-0.
- The Sharks through would find victory at No. 1 doubles as graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) dropped an 8-4 decision, as Simmons closed the gap to 2-1.
- Garcia closed out her strong day with a win at No. 4 singles, taking down her opponent in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, increasing the Blue Jays edge to 3-1.
- Her doubles teammate Sirisavath also finished the day 2-0, earning the win at No. 3 singles in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, extending the lead to 4-1.
- Hardy secured the victory for USJ at No. 5 singles, winning her matchup in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, increasing the USJ advantage to 5-1.
- The Sharks took the victory at No. 1 singles, as after dropping the opening set, 6-3, Santoro took the second set 6-4, but dropped the tiebreaker, allowing Simmons to close the gap to 5-2.
- Simmons also won at No. 2 singles, as Rossetti fell in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
- The Sharks also found victory at No. 6 singles to close out the match, as junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) fell in a thrilling contest, 5-7, 6-4, 1-0, but it was not enough as USJ already secured victory, 5-4.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return to the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex on Monday, September 16 for a non-conference match against UMass Dartmouth. Opening serve against the Corsairs in West Hartford is slated for 3:00 p.m.
