Women's Tennis Sweeps Western Connecticut, 9-0, Friday Afternoon
DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team picked up its second-straight victory, defeating intrastate foes Western Connecticut State University (WCSU) in sweeping fashion, 9-0, Friday afternoon on the Westside Courts in Danbury, Conn. The Blue Jays and Wolves agreed to play a nine-point match. With the result, the Blue Jays improve to 2-1 on the year while the Wolves drop to 1-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The duo of freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) started the match with a victory at No. 2 doubles, defeating Sophie Charbonneau and Ava Ciampi, 8-3.
- The Blue Jays No. 1 doubles team of graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) followed suit with a 8-3 victory, picking up their second-straight win as a duo.
- USJ compelted the doubles sweep at No. 3 doubles, as the pair of graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) won their match 8-2, sending the Blue Jays into the singles portion of the match with a commanding 3-0 lead.
- Rossetti maintained her perfect start to her collegiate career at No. 2 singles, picking up a dominating 6-1, 6-0, straight set victory to increase USJ's lead to 4-0.
- Sirisavath secured victory for the Blue Jays at No. 3 singles, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
- The Blue Jays continued to roll at No. 5 singles, as junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to establish a 6-0 USJ advantage.
- Santoro rounded out her day with a convincing victory at No. 1 singles, securing a 6-2, 6-1 straight set victory, increasing the gap to 7-0.
- Freshman Carolina Mancini (Manchester, Conn.) also played a stellar match at No. 6 singles, picking up a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
- Garcia rounded out the sweep with a thrilling comeback victory at No. 4 singles. After dropping the opening set, 6-2, Garcia bounced back with a 6-1 victory in the second set, before dominating the tiebreaker, 10-1, to win her match, and complete the 9-0 sweep for USJ.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays continue a five-game road trip, tomorrow, Saturday, Septemeber 7, at non-conference foes Curry College. Opening serve against the Colonels at the Trent J. Scott '96 Tennis Courts in Milton, Mass., is slated for 3:30 p.m.
