Women's Tennis Sweeps Albertus Magnus to Open GNAC Play, 9-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team began Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a dominating 9-0 victory on the road at rival Albertus Magnus College Tuesday afternoon at Celetano Courts in New Haven, Conn. During the 2024 season, all GNAC matches will be played as nine-point matches, compared to seven-point matches in non-conference contests. The Blue Jays lost only 12 games across the nine total matches, while picking up six shutout victories. With the result, the Blue Jays improve to 1-1 on the year and start 1-0 in GNAC play, while the Falcons drop to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The team of graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) began the day with a convincing 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles.
  • The Blue Jays continued to roll at No. 3 doubles, as the duo of junior Alexandra Long (East Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) also secured an 8-0 win.
  • Graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) completed the doubles sweep at No. 1 doubles, taking home an 8-2 victory.
  • The wins continued to pile on for the Blue Jays as the match entered the singles portion, as junior Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) secured a 6-0, 6-0, straight-set victory, increasing the USJ lead to 4-0.
  • Junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) clinched the win for USJ at No. 3 singles, also picking up a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set victory to establish a 5-0 edge.
  • Rossetti continued her perfect start to her debut season, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles to increase the gap to 6-0.
  • Santoro was forced to battle for her victory at No. 1 singles, but ultimately overcame her opponent in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
  • Sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) continued the Blue Jays' winning ways at No. 5 singles, taking home a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
  • Sophomore Daynah Echevarria (New Britain, Conn.) completed the sweep for USJ, earning a 6-0, 6-0 straight-set victory.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays step back out of conference play as it continues a five-game road trip, stopping in Danbury, Conn., for a matchup against Western Connecticut State University on Friday, September 6. First serve against the Wolves at the Westside Courts is slated for 3:30 p.m.
