Women's Tennis Drops Season Opener at Home to Bridgewater State

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team was beaten by the Bridgewater State University (BSU) Bears in non-conference action, 5-2, to open the 2024 campaign Saturday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford Conn. The Bears won two of the three doubles matches to secure the sole point awarded for doubles play, while garnering victories in four of the six singles matches to take home the win. With the results, the Blue Jays begin the year at 0-1, while the Bears move to 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The freshman duo of Maddie Rossetti (Hamden, Conn.) and Shelly Sirisavath (East Hartford, Conn.) secured their first doubles win of their collegiate careers, winning 8-1 over Samantha Bennecourt and Meghan Lotti to start the match at No. 2 doubles.
  • The Bears would bounce back at No. 3 doubles, as the team of Sarah Pothier and Morgan Smith defeated the team of sophomore Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) and graduate student Kate Hardy (Southington, Conn.), 8-4.
  • BSU gained the solo point awarded for doubles matches after picking up the win at No. 1 doubles, as the team of graduate student Olivia Santoro (Cheshire, Conn.) and junior Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.) dropped an hour long nail-biter 6-8 to Madeline Von Ruden and Mackenzie Silveira.
  • Sirisavath continued her impressive debut match as the match turned over into singles play, securing victory at No. 3 singles over Lotti, 6-0, 6-3, to tie the match at 1-1.
  • The Bears regained the lead after No. 4 singles, when Garcia fell short to Pothier, 6-0, 6-0.
  • BSU increased the gap to 3-1 at No. 1 singles, as Von Ruden defeated Santoro, 6-3, 6-2.
  • Samantha Bettencourt secured the win for the visitors after No. 5 singles, taking down freshman Carolina Mancini (Manhcester, Conn.) in her debut match, 6-2, 6-2.
  • Rossetti answered back for the Blue Jays at the No. 2 singles position, winning her second match of the day after a 6-3, 6-4 straight set victory over Silveira.
  • The Bears secured the 5-2 victory after No. 6 singles, as Aislyn Kelliher defeated Hardy, 7-5, 6-2.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays embark on a five-game road trip, starting with the teams' Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener on Tuesday, September 3 at rivals Albertus Magnus College in new Haven, Conn. First serve against the Falcons at the Celentano Courts is slated for 4:00 p.m.
