Women's Tennis Tames WCSU, 5-4, Tuesday Afternoon

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's tennis team won its second straight match, defeating intrastate foes Western Connecticut State University (WCSU), 5-4, Tuesday afternoon at the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays improve to 2-3 overall while the Wolves drop to 3-1.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The No. 2 doubles team of senior Ananya Srivatsav (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Jillian Milo (Southington, Conn.) started the match with a bang, defeating WCSU's Diana Rebelo and Lizzie Contreras, 8-2, to establish a 1-0 USJ lead.
  • The Wolves quickly tied the match at 1-1 at No. 1 doubles, as Melanie Grasso and Cierra Kitt defeated the duo of senior Kathleen Gilland (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Liliana Garcia (Wethersfield, Conn.), 8-4.
  • Sophomore Gia Alvarez (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Nina Gardella (Lebanon, Conn.) swung the lead back in USJ's favor at No. 3 doubles, defeating Brooke Stillman and Aylina Razeq, 8-6, to establish a 2-1 Blue Jays' lead entering the singles matches.
  • Kitt would tie the match back up at 2-2 at No. 1 singles, defeating Gilland in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
  • Milo quickly responded at No. 5 singles, taking down Contreras, 6-1, 6-3, to see USJ take a 3-2 lead.
  • Grasso re-equalized the match at 3-3, defeating Garcia during No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
  • Srivatsav put the Blue Jays within one match of victory at No. 3 singles, holding off Rebelo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to give USJ a 4-3 edge.
  • Senior Anna Nemergut (Stratford, Conn.) secured the victory for the Blue Jays at No. 6 singles, coming back to defeat Stillman, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0, and establish a 5-3 USJ edge.
  • WCSU would win the final match of the day though, as Natalie Paradise defeated Alvarez in straight sets at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 6-3, to see USJ win the match, 5-4.

The Blue Jays quickly return to the courts, facing off with Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and intrastate rivals Albertus Magnus College tomorrow, Wednesday, September 20. First serve against the Falcons on the Elizabeth Ferry Speer Tennis Complex is set for 3:30 p.m.
