Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Plymouth State, Falls to Husson Saturday Morning

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team split a double-dual meet at home Saturday morning inside Bruyette Natatorium, defeating Plymouth State University and falling to Husson University. The Blue Jays bested the Panthers by a score of 184-87 and narrowly fell to the Eagles, 147.5-146.5.

TOP PERFORMANCES

  • 200 Yard Medley Relay – The team of freshmen Charlotte Poltronieri (Enfield, Conn.) and Alina Niemczyk (Vernon, Conn.), sophomore Alexia Grech (Burlington, Conn.) and senior Amy Mamica (Rocky Hill, Conn.) finished in second place, combining for a time of 2:08.84.
  • 1000 Yard Free – Sophomore Kate Ostrowski (Wyckoff, N.J.) won the event for USJ, touching the wall in a time of 14:00.23.
  • 200 Yard Free – Mamica won the event for the Blue Jays, posting a time of 2:16.94.
  • 50 Yard Back - Junior Julianna Violette (Rocky Hill, Conn.) paced the Blue Jays, finishing in third after recording a time of 34.99 seconds.
  • 50 Yard Breaststroke – Sophomore Isabella Castrillo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) topped the timing sheet for USJ, placing third after posting a time of 40.22 seconds.
  • 100 Yard Fly - Niemczyk won the event for USJ, finishing in a time of 1:05.89.
  • 50 Yard Free – Grech continued the Blue Jays' winning ways, posting a time of 28.00 seconds.
  • 100 Yard Free – Grech won her second event in a row, topping the timing sheet with a time of 1:02.31.
  • 100 Yard Back - Sophomore Karina Deros (Watertown, Conn.) paced USJ in the event, finishing in sixth with a time of 1:26.22.
  • 100 Yard Breaststroke - Castrillo finished in second place to lead the Blue Jays, recording a time of 1:28.68.
  • 500 Yard Free – Violette won the event, touching the wall in a time of 6:27.29.
  • 50 Yard Fly – Niemczyk won her second event of the day, posting a time of 29.92 seconds.
  • 1 Meter Diving - Sophomore Sophia Simoes (Watertown, Conn.) paced the Blue Jays, finishing in second place after posting an 11-dives score of 171.97 points.
  • 100 Yard IM – Violette topped the timing sheet for USJ, finishing in second place with a time of 1:16.69.
  • 200 Yard Free Relay - The team of Mamica, Niemczyk, Poltronieri and Grech won the event, combining for a time of 1:53.04.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays remain in West Hartford, hosting a double-dual meet against Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foes Albertus Magnus College and Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday, November 2. The meet against the Falcons and Monks inside Bruyette Natatorium is slated to begin at noon.
