Women's Swimming & Diving Sixth After First Day of GNAC Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's swimming and diving team began the 2024 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships on Friday, tallying 137 points to sit in sixth place after the first day of action inside the WPI Sports & Recreation Center in Worcester, Mass. Freshmen Kaia Michaud (Hamden, Conn.) broke the program's freshman record in the 50-yard fly on the day.

TOP PERFORMANCES 

  • 200 Yard Medley Relay – The team of sophomore Julianna Violette (Rocky Hill, Conn.), junior Amy Mamica (Rocky Hill, Conn.), Michaud and freshman Alexia Grech (Burlington, Conn.) finished in sixth, combining for a time of 2:03.63.
  • 400 Yard IM – Violette was the lone Blue Jay in the finals, finishing in sixth in a time of 5:32.04.
  • 200 Yard Free – Mamica paced USJ, recording a time of 2:07.30 to place seventh.
  • 50 Yard Fly – Michaud broke the program's freshman record during prelims, setting a new mark of 28.99, breaking Suki Hood's time of 29.22, set back in 2010. During the finals, Michaud shattered her own record, touching the wall in 28.68 seconds to finish in fifth.
  • 100 Yard Breaststroke – Freshman Isabella Castrillo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) finished in 11th, recording a time of 1:28.27.
  • 200 Yard Back – Violette was the lone Blue Jay, finishing in 11th with a time of 2:37.16.
  • 1000 Yard Free – Senior Adelina Marcille (Waterford, Conn.) topped the timing sheet for USJ, finishing in 10th with a time of 13:11.42.
  • 400 Yard Free Relay – The team of Mamica, Grech, Violette and Michaud combined for a time of 4:01.13 to finish in fifth place.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays continue the GNAC Championships tomorrow, Saturday, February 3. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m. inside the WPI Sports & Recreation Center in Worcester, Mass., with finals beginning at roughly 6:00p.m.
