Women's Soccer Takes Down New England College, 2-0, Saturday Afternoon

HENNIKER, N.H. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team used a two-goal first half to take down New England College (NEC), 2-0, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Saturday afternoon at Don Melander Field in Henniker, N.H. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 3-6-1 on the year and 3-2-1 in GNAC play, while the Pilgrims drop to 0-8-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the conference.

KEY MOMENTS

  • USJ would strike first, finding the back of the net after senior midfielder Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) picked out junior forward Alana Picard (Windsor Locks, Conn.), who slotted the ball home and established a 1-0 USJ lead.
  • Picard would then turn provider at the 29:03 mark, finding senior forward Kelsi Ursini (Groton, Conn.) who fired her shot past the Pilgrims goalkeeper to increase the lead to 2-0.
  • NEC would try and find an equalizer, but sophomore goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) would produce three saves to keep the Pilgrims off the board and preserve the 2-0 scoreline entering the second half.
  • The Pilgrims would generate the better chances in the second half, forcing Corcoran to make three more saves, but NEC could not find a way past the Blue Jays defense as the visitors held on for a 2-0 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • USJ held a commanding 22-11 edge in shots.
  • The Blue Jays and Pilgrims were deadlocked in corner kicks, 1-1.
  • Corcoran played all 90 minutes in net for USJ, tallying three saves to keep the shutout.
