Pair of Late Goals Steals Win for Elms Over Women's Soccer Tuesday Night, 3-2
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team fell at home to visiting Elms College (Elms), 3-2, Tuesday night during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. The Blazers scored twice inside the last 10 minutes of play to steal the victory. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 5-9-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the GNAC, while the Blazers moved to 8-7-0 on the year and 7-4-0 in conference play.
KEY MOMENTS
- After nearly taking the lead in the 18th minute after a shot rattled off the post, Elms grabbed the advantage at the 21:07 mark, taking a 1-0 lead.
- The Blazers would keep the Blue Jays at bay for the remainder of the half, perserving the 1-0 lead.
- USJ quickly equalized three minutes into the start of the second half, as senior midfielders Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) and Ava Kriak (Vernon, Conn.) combined for a passing play that lead to senior defender Gabby Gulino (Wethersfield, Conn.) who rifled a shot into the net to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Blue Jays continued to push for a second goal, and were rewarded at the 73:50 mark when juniors Gillian Barresi (Holtsville, N.Y.) and Christina Quitoni (Patchogue, N.Y.) were credited with an assist on a senior forward Jelly Frigo (West Hartford, Conn.) goal, that saw the home team take a 2-1 lead.
- However, Elms would level the game at the 81:37 mark, before netting the game-winner with 86:33 on the clock, stealing the victory, 3-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Guilno scored her second goal of the year, while Frigo notched her first.
- Elms outshot USJ, 11-8.
- The Blazers also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) played all 90 minutes in net, tallying two saves.
