Women's Soccer Downs Dean at Home Tuesday Afternoon, 4-1

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team fell utilized a three-goal second half to take down Dean College (Dean), 4-1, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play Tuesday afternoon at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. After the game was tied 1-1 at halftime, USJ scored three goals in the second half to secure the victory. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 2-5-0 on the year and 2-2-0 in GNAC play, while the Bulldogs move to 1-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the conference.

KEY MOMENTS

  • USJ controlled the opening portion of the game, finding the back of the net at the 21:11 mark after junior forward Alana Picard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) found freshman midfielder Julia Loughman (Wolcott, Conn.) who fired her shot into the net and established a 1-0 USJ lead.
  • Dean quickly answered back, scoring at the 23:20 mark to tie the game at 1-1.
  • USJ would continue to rattle off shots at the Dean net, but could not find a second, as the game remained deadlocked at 1-1 entering the break.
  • The Blue Jays did not have to wait long to retake the lead, as junior defender Zoe Zappone (Plymouth, Conn.) scored a solo goal at the 54:16 mark to establish a 2-1 USJ lead.
  • USJ made it 3-1 at the 59:45 mark after Picard and Loughman combined for a passing play to sophomore midfielder Brooke Landry (Vernon, Conn.) who scored her first goal of the year.
  • Picard put the game to rest at the 61:08 mark, finding the back of the net to increase the lead to 4-1.
  • Dean would not be able to find a way back in the game as USJ secured the 4-1 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Loughman netted her third goal of the year.
  • Zappone and Picard scored their second goals of the season, while Landry tallied her first.
  • USJ outshot Dean on the day, 24-3.
  • The Bulldogs had the edge in corner kicks though, 5-4.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) recorded her first win of the season, tallying two saves.

The Blue Jays make the short trip down Albany Avenue for their final non-conference game of the 2024 season, heading to the University of Hartford tomorrow, Wednesday September 18. Kickoff against the Hawks at Al-Marzook Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
