Women's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Match to Connecticut College Thursday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's soccer team dropped an intrastate non-conference match, 6-0, to the visiting Connecticut College (Conn) Camels Thursday night at the USJ Soccer Field in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays dip to 1-2-0 overall on the young season while the Camels, who were contesting in their season 2023 season opener, start the year 1-0-0.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Connecticut College started quickly, recording two shots and two corner kicks in the first two and half minutes, before senior midfielder Morgan Plouffe (Johnston, R.I) opened the scoring for the Camels at the 2:42 mark. A corner kick taken by senior defender Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass.) found the head of graduate student forward Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) at the far post. Johnson headed the ball back into the middle of the 18-yard box and Plouffe was there to put it away to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Blue Jays tried to respond, but senior forward Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled the Camels' lead off an assist from junior defender Sarah Hobbs (Kansas City, Mo.) 16:10 into the match.
  • The Camels continued to put pressure on the Blue Jays back line and created multiple corner kick opportunities in the first half. After converting on its second corner of the game to open the scoring, Conn would once again find pay dirt on its fifth corner. Once again Moran played the ball in, and this time connected with senior midfielder Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.) in the 31st minute to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Just before halftime, freshman midfielder Zola Alcaro (Norwell, Mass.) notched her first collegiate goal off a feed from junior midfielder Madison Lynch (Noank, Conn.), as Conn took a 4-0 advantage into the break.
  • Conn continued its strong play in the second half, as Johnson scored twice over the opening 19 minutes of the final stanza to extend the visitors' lead out to 6-0. Johnson's first tally came off an assist from Scarpantonio in the 55th minute, before Plouffe recorded the assist on Johnson's second goal at the 63:33 mark.

NOTES 

  • The Camels led in every facet of the contest, outshooting the Blue Jays 25-0 overall, including a 12-0 mark on shots on goal.
  • Conn held a significant advantage in corner kick opportunities, 10-0.
  • Senior Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) registered the win (1-0-0) between the pipes for the Camels, playing the first half and facing no shots. Senior Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.) came on in the second half, recording 29:44 of action, with junior Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) amassing 9:46 minutes of work, and freshman Riley Schlick-Trask (Bradenton, Fla.) finishing out the final five and a half minutes in her collegiate debut.
  • Sophomore Chandler Douglas (North Haven, Conn.) and freshman Madison Corcoran (Bristol, Conn.) shared time in goal for the Blue Jays. Douglas got the start and played 34:23, making one save and was dealt the loss (0-1-0). Corcoran logged 55:37 in goal and finished with five saves.

Women's soccer will need to shake it off quickly as it returns right back to action on Saturday, September 9 for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match, welcoming newcomer to the league New England College to the USJ Soccer Field. Kickoff between the Blue Jays and Pilgrims is set for 1:00 p.m. in West Hartford.
