Spezzano Tabbed GNAC Corvias Player of the Week
WINTHROP, Mass. - Senior Jessica Spezzano (Watertown, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph soccer team posted a five-point game in a 3-0 victory over Regis (Mass.) on Saturday and was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Corvias Women's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. It marks the first time this season that Spezzano has earned the honor.
In the lone game of the week for the Blue Jays, Spezzano had a part in every goal, scoring the first two then assisting on the final one to defeat Regis (Mass.), 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at home in USJ's GNAC opener. The five-point outburst marks a career-high for Spezzano and it is her second career multi-goal effort across two seasons. She netted what would be the game-winner in the 38th minute. After drawing a foul 25 yards out at the top of the penalty area, Spezzano converted the free kick opportunity, curling a shot into the top-right corner of the net.
Spezzano then extended the Blue Jays' lead to 2-0 less than two minutes into the second half, finding the back of the net with a left-footed strike on the left wing off a nice feed from junior Amanda Ghent (Portland, Conn.) before she capped off her day with an assist in the 71st minute to seal the victory. The senior drove up the left wing and played a cross into the scoring area that found the foot of freshman Alyssa Fecko (Stafford, Conn.) who converted a brilliant finished off the far post in the top-left corner.
Spezzano currently sits third on her team in points with seven coming on two goals and three assists through three games. The Blue Jays sport an overall record of 2-0-1 and sit at 1-0 in GNAC action.
Spezzano and the USJ soccer team will return back to the pitch next on Wednesday night in another GNAC battle on the road against Simmons College. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
