Women's Lacrosse Falls on the Road to Mount Holyoke Wednesday Night

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference road game to Mount Holyoke College (MHC), 16-7, Wednesday night at the Mount Holyoke Turf and Track Complex in South Hadley, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays moved to 1-1 on the the year, while the Lyons opened their 2025 campaign 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lyons jumped out to a quick two-goal lead, holding a 2-0 edge at the 8:15 mark.
  • USJ fired back though, as sophomore midfielder Paige Rieger (New Fairfield, Conn.) scored a player-up goal at the 6:11 mark, cutting the gap to 2-1.
  • Junior midfielder Alana Picard (Windsor Locks, Conn.) then tied the game at 2-2, scoring a player-up goal of her own with 4:26 left in the first.
  • The Blue Jays continued to pile on the pressure offesnveily, taking the lead, 3-2, at the 1:13 mark after sophomore midfielder Reagan Buscetto (Montville, Conn.) scored a solo goal. The scoreline would hold entering the second quarter.
  • However, MHC dominated the second stanza, scoring seven unanswered goals to hold a 9-3 edge with 3:03 left in the half.
  • Buscetto netted her second goal of the game to stop the run, converting on a free position chance to send USJ into the halftime break trailing, 9-4.
  • Sophomore attack Anna LeGault (Colchester, Conn.) carried the momentum into the third quarter, scoring off an assist from Picard to close the deficit to four, 9-5, 17 seconds into the third quarter.
  • The Lyons would control the remainder of the quarter though, tacking on five goals to increase the disadvantage to 14-5 entering the fourth quarter.
  • Picard and LeGault were able to find the back of th net again in the fourth quarter, but the deficit was to great to overcome, as MHC secured the win, 16-7.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Picard finished with a team-high three points off two goals and one assist.
  • Buscetto and LeGault also notched two goals each.
  • Picard and Rieger corralled a team-high five ground balls each.
  • Picard also tallied a team-best seven draw controls.
  • Senior defender Karina Jassil (North Branford, Conn.) caused a team-best two turnovers.
  • Junior Colleen Stringer (Point Lookout, N.Y.) played all 60 minutes in the cage for USJ, recording 18 saves.

UP NEXT

The Blue Jays return to West Hartford to make their 2025 home debut on Tuesday, March 4 against intrastate foe Eastern Connecticut State University. Opening draw against the Warriors at the USJ Lacrosse Field is set for 5:00 p.m.
