Women's Lax Drops Non-Conference Contest To ECSU

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.  The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference matchup to the Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) Warriors, 21-5, on the USJ Lacrosse Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

Half a dozen players scored at least twice for the Warriors (2-0), including sophomore Shay Ventresca (Oakdale, Conn.), who led the way with five. Junior midfielder Taya Valdez (East Lyme, Conn.) and sophomore attack Mackenzie Dinger (Hingham, Mass.) scored two goals each for the Blue Jays (1-1). Senior midfielder Symantha Fazzino (Newington, Conn.) also chipped in with a goal to round out the scoring for USJ. The Warriors set the tone from the opening draw control, netting nine goals in a row, and handling USJ from start to finish.

25 – The Warriors were first to the ground, securing 25 ground balls, to just 13 for USJ.

NOTES

  • Valdez scored two of the Blue Jays five goals back-to-back in the second half.
  • Eastern outshot Saint Joseph, 39-9, 29 of them on goal.
  • The Warriors were 5-for-9 on free-position shots.

GOALIE BREAKDOWN

USJ
 – Junior Nina Lestrud (Torrington, Conn.) saved eight shots in goal, going the full 60 minutes in a losing effort (1-1).

ECSU
 – Sophomore Nicole Gaston (West Haven, Conn.) picked up the win (2-0), saving a goal on three shots in 30 minutes. Sophomore Sarah Gallagher (South Windsor, Conn.) also saw 30 minutes of action and made a pair of saves.

The USJ women's lacrosse team has two weeks of preparation ahead before a meeting with in-state rival and fellow Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe, Albertus Magnus College on Saturday, March 27 at 1:00 p.m. on the USJ Lacrosse Field.
