Lacrosse Falls on the Road at Norwich Tuesday Night

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich women's lacrosse team scored 10 unanswered goals in the opening 16 minutes of action to run away with an 18-3 victory over the visiting University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays, on a rainy Tuesday night at Sabine Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. With the setback, the Blue Jays slip to 1-4 overall and 0-4 in the GNAC while the Cadets improve to 4-3 and 3-1 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Junior Kathryn Albretsen (Cotuit, Mass.) scored the first three goals of the game, all unassisted, to give her a hat-trick in the opening 8:30 of play and the Cadets would never look back en route to the 18-3 win. The Cadets tacked on seven more unanswered goals to race out to a 10-0 lead, including three from senior Meaghan McGrath (Barre, Vt.), before USJ got on the scoreboard with 6:20 left before halftime on the fifth goal of the season from sophomore Charlotte Eberhardt (Thomaston, Conn.).

Norwich closed out the half with two more goals to make it 12-1 entering the halftime intermission and then sophomore Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md.) recorded a marker to start the second period to push the NU lead to 13-1. Eberhardt found the back of the net for her second goal of the game and team-best sixth of the season 3:55 into the final stanza to trim the deficit to 13-2.

NU followed with a goal before senior Danielle Bazzano (South Windsor, Conn.) recorded her second goal of the year with just over 21 minutes left in regulation to make it 14-3. That would complete the scoring for the Blue Jays as the Cadets ended the game with four unanswered goals to account for the 18-3 final margin.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• Eberhardt's two goals led the way for the Blue Jays as she finished with a team-high four shots. She also picked up a groundball and forced the lone caused turnover for USJ in the contest.
• Senior Hannah Lemek (Bristol, Conn.) controlled all three of USJ's draw controls in the game, but the Blue Jays were bested in the stat category, 19-3.
• The Cadets doubled up the Blue Jays in groundballs, 18-9, and USJ was led by freshman Symantha Fazzino (Newington, Conn.) who posted three on the night.
• Senior goalie Emily Bourassa (Bristol, Conn.) was dealt the loss and falls to 1-4 on the season. She faced 29 shots on goal and made 11 stops.
• Sophomore Lawson Hayes picked up the win allowing just one goal over the first 30 minutes of play before she was relieved by junior Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) in the second half.
• Albretsen finished with six goals and McGrath posted four goals and an assist to lead the way for the Cadets.
