BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Saint Joseph lacrosse team suffered a tough 15-1 setback on the road to the Simmons College Sharks on Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Blue Jays slip to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the GNAC with the loss, while the Sharks improve to 4-6 and 1-2 in the league with the triumph.
Junior attacker Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied her second goal of the day with 20:19 left to play in the opening half on a free position shot to give Simmons a 6-0 lead and become just the fourth player in school history to score 100 career goals. She was one of five players on the afternoon to net multiple goals for the hosts. First-year attacker Kate Bowers (Belchertown, Mass.) registered a pair of goals, picked up three ground balls, caused a pair of turnovers and won a draw control. Sophomore attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) collected three points with two goals and an assist, in addition to a ground ball and a caused turnover.
The Sharks dominated the draw, winning 15-of-18 draw controls, and controlled possession for the majority of the match. Simmons owned a robust 31-2 shot advantage and was a perfect 9-9 on clear attempts. Junior goalie Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) earned the victory, facing just one shot on goal for 60 minutes.
Junior attacker Hannah Lemek (Bristol, Conn.) led the way for Saint Joseph with a goal to go with two ground balls and a pair of draw controls. Sophomore defender Diamond Wallen (Hartford, Conn.) came up with three ground balls and caused a turnover, while junior goalie Emily Bourassa (Bristol, Conn.) stopped nine shots for the Blue Jays and caused a trio of turnovers.
Simmons scored the first nine goals of the game in the first 17:30 of play in the first half to take control of the match. Lemek broke the scoring drought for the Blue Jays, scoring the team's lone goal with 12:06 remaining in the first half. Simmons then went on to hold the visitors scoreless for the final 42:06 of play and needed just two second half goals to ensure their victory.
The University of Saint Joseph lacrosse team will look to bounce back and get its first win in league play when they host intrastate GNAC foe Albertus Magnus on Wednesday. The opening draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
