Lacrosse Beats Albertus, 13-7

NEW HAVEN – The University of Saint Joseph lacrosse team defeated Albertus Magnus College 13-7 Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Celentano Field.

In cold and windy conditions, the Blue Jays snapped a four-game conference losing streak to improve to 4-6 on the spring and 1-4 in GNAC play, while the Falcons remained winless to move to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in league games.

Freshman Rose St. Hilaire (West Hartford, Conn.) had a big game for USJ, scoring eight goals to go along with two assists. She netted back-to-back goals three different times during the game. Sophomore Danielle Bazzano (South Windsor, Conn.) scored three times for St. Joseph, which received a goal apiece from Lindsey Stefens (Berlin, Conn.) and Hannah Lemek (Bristol, Conn.), who also had two assists and won seven draw controls.

St. Hilaire scored the first two goals and USJ never trailed. Albertus was able to pull even at 3-3, but St. Hilaire's third score with 18:43 to play in the first half gave USJ the lead for good. It started a five-goal run the concluded with Stefens' goal that made it 8-3 with 7:56 left in the half and the Blue Jays led 9-5 at halftime. Bazzano and St. Hilaire scored two second-half goals piece and Albertus was never able to get closer than a four-goal margin.

Sophomore Jenny Luna (Brentwood, N.Y.) paced the AMC attack with three goals.

Between the pipes, Emily Bourassa (Bristol, Conn.) turned aside 13 of 20 shots faced for USJ. The Blue Jays outshot Albertus overall 36-23 overall and put more shots on goal, 29-20.

USJ plays at Mitchell in a non-conference game, Thursday April 14 at 4 p.m.
