
Women's Basketball Secures Bounce-Back Victory Over Regis, 76-55, Saturday Afternoon
WESTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team got back in the win column, taking down Regis College (Regis) on the road during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, 76-55, Saturday afternoon on Higgins Court in Weston, Mass. With the result, the Blue Jays improved to 11-6 overall and 6-1 in the GNAC, while the Pride dropped to 4-12 on the year and 3-3 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USJ jumped out to an early advantage, holding a 10-2 lead after senior guard Maya Slisz (New Britain, Conn.) sunk a pair of free-throws at the 5:58 mark.
- Regis would close the deficit to four, but a 6-2 Blue Jays scoring run, featuring four points from graduate student guard Taylor Verboven (Columbia, Conn.) reestablished an eight-point edge, 16-8, with 3:24 on the clock.
- USJ continued to roll, closing the half on a 10-1 stretch, capped off by back-to-back buckets from graduate student forwards Jordan Ouellette (Bristol, Conn.) and Maci Dorantes (Bristol, Conn.), to hold a 26-11 edge after the first quarter.
- The Blue Jays carried the momentum into the second quarter, opening on a 10-2 run, fuled by buckets from Ouellette, freshman guard Nevaeh Yorke (Norwich, Conn.), Slisz and Dorantes, to break open a 36-13 edge at the 6:43 mark.
- USJ would increase the advantage to 25 to close out the first half, as Yorke and Ouellette both found the bottom of the net to send the Blue Jays into the halftime break with a 50-25 lead.
- The Blue Jays would start the third quarter on an 8-0 run, holding a 58-25 edge after a Dorantes layup with 7:25 on the clock.
- USJ continued to control the game, increasing the gap to 33 after freshman guard Sequoia Turcotte Briggs (Andover, Conn.) sunk a late jumper to establish a 67-34 lead heading into the fourth.
- The Pride would outscore the Blue Jays 21-9 in the fourth, but the deficit was too much to overcome, as USJ took home a 76-55 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Slisz paced the team with 18 points.
- Ouellette notched a double-double, scoring 14 points and hauling in 13 rebounds.
- Dorantes also hit double-figures, scoring a season-high 14 points after shooting a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.
- Senior forward Janai Oliver (Hartford, Conn.) tied her career-high of 10 rebounds.
- Verboven dished out a team-best five assists.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return to West Hartford to kick off a two-game homestand on Wednesday, January 29 against intrastate foe Mitchell College. Tipoff against the Mariners inside James. A Calhoun Gymnasium is set for 7:00 p.m.
