Ouellette Drops 27, Women's Hoops Falls to Local Foe Trinity Friday in New York

BRONX, N.Y. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team dropped a non-conference contest against local foes Trinity College (Trinity), 93-73,  during the opening round of the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament, hosted by Lehman College inside The Apex in the Bronx, N.Y. Friday afternoon. Graduate student forward Jordan Ouellette (Bristol, Conn.) scored a game-high 27 points during the contest. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 4-5 on the season while the Bantams move to 8-2 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trinity jumped out to an early lead, holding a 9-0 advantage at the 8:15 mark.
  • Ouellette would score back-to-back buckets for USJ, closing the deficit to 11-4 with 6:32 left in the first.
  • The Blue Jays would keep within six, as free throws from senior guard Maya Slisz (New Britain, Conn.) and graduate student guard Taylor Verboven (Columbia, Conn.) closed the score to 14-8 with 4:13 on the clock.
  • The Bantams and Blue Jays would trade buckets to close out the quarter as Trinity held a 23-17 lead.
  • Ouellette continued her strong start to the game closing the deficit to three, 27-24, with 6:03 left in the half.
  • However, the Bantams would break open a double-digit lead, establishing a 36-26 lead with 3:55 on the clock.
  • USJ would cut the gap to four, 36-32, after a layup by Slisz with 2:27 remaining in the half, although the Bantams responded with an 8-4 stretch to hold a 44-36 advantage at the half.
  • Trinity took control in the third quarter, outscoring the Blue Jays 31-20 to take a 75-56 edge into the fourth quarter.
  • The Blue Jays would not be able to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter as the Bantams took home a 93-73 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Ouellette paced the USJ offense with a game-high 27 points.
  • Slisz also dropped 20 or more points, scoring 25 on the afternoon.
  • Verboven hauled in a game-high seven rebounds.
  • Freshman guard Nevaeh Yorke (Norwich, Conn.) dished out a game-best five assists.
  • The Bantams outshot the Blue Jays from the field, 56.1 percent to 42.6 percent, and from beyond the three-point arc, 41.2 percent to 27.3 percent.
  • USJ and Trinity both hauled in 35 rebounds each.
  • The Bantams dominated inside the paint, scoring 48 points from close range.

The Blue Jays round out the CUNY Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament with the consolation tomorrow, Saturday, December 28th against the host Lightning of Lehman College at noon.
