Women's Hoops Handles Regis, 79-54, at Home Saturday

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games, taking down the visiting Regis College Pride (Regis), 79-54, during Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Saturday afternoon inside James A. Calhoun Gymnasium in West Hartford, Conn. With the result, the Blue Jays move to 15-3 overall on the year and 6-1 in GNAC play, while the Pride move to 6-11 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue Jays got off to a solid start, taking a 7-3 lead at the 7:01 mark, after buckets from junior guard Maya Slisz (new Britain, Conn.), senior forward Jordan Ouellette (Bristol, Conn.) and senior guard Taylor Verboven (Columbia, Conn.).
  • USJ continued to roll, as Ouellette knocked down a close-range jumper after a nice pass from Verboven, increasing the lead to eight, 11-3, and forcing a Regis timeout with 6:16 on the clock.
  • The Blue Jays kept their foot on the gas, as a senior guard Amanda Fudge (Middletown, Conn.) triple, followed by tough buckets from Ouellette and Slisz, increased the USJ lead to 15, 18-3, with 4:42 left in the first.
  • The two teams would trade buckets to close out the quarter, as USJ took a 22-8 edge into the second.
  • Regis cut the gap to 11 after a 5-2 run to start the second, 24-13, but a 4-0 USJ run reestablished a 15-point lead, 28-13, with 7:35 on the clock.
  • The Blue Jays extended the stretch to 10-0 after buckets from Slisz, Fudge, Ouellette and junior forward Janai Oliver (Hartford, Conn.), increasing the gap to 23, 36-13, as the game reached a media timeout at the 4:59 mark.
  • USJ continued to dominate on both ends of the court to close out the quarter, taking a 46-14 edge into the halftime break.
  • The Blue Jays extended its lead to 61-22 after a mid-range jumper by Verboven, as the game reached a media timeout with 4:17 on the clock in the third.
  • The two teams traded buckets to close out the quarter, as USJ held a 65-32 advantage entering the fourth quarter.
  • The Blue Jays maintained a 30-point edge, 68-38, after a mid-range jumper from Fudge, as the game hit the final media timeout of the day with 6:26 left to play.
  • The Pride continued to cut into the lead, but the deficit proved to much as USJ took home a 79-54 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

  • Ouellette posted a game-high 17 points.
  • Slisz, 14 points, and Verboven, 12 points, joined her in double figures.
  • Ouellette also paced the team in rebounds, hauling in 11 to record her sixth double-double.
  • Verboven notched her fourth double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds.
  • Verboven also dished out a team-high four assists.
  • USJ outshot Regis, 45.8 percent to 32.8 percent.
  • The Blue Jays held a significant advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Pride, 55-29.

UP NEXT
The Blue Jays begin a quick two-game road trip, starting on Wednesday, January 24th for a stop at intrastate foe and conference newcomers Mitchell College. Tipoff against the Mariners inside the Yarnall Athletic Center in New London, Conn., is set for 5:00 p.m.
