Slisz Named to NEWBA Team of the Week
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Junior guard Maya Slisz (New Britain, Conn.) of the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team was selected to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) All-First Team, it was announced by association officials on Tuesday in its sixth weekly report of the season. The weekly award covered games from Dec. 11 through Dec. 31. It marks the second career weekly NEWBA honor for Slisz, as she received the honor after the opening week of the year, and the fourth for the Blue Jays this season.
The New Britain native began the final stretch of 2023 by scoring 12 points while hauling in three rebounds and dishing out three assists in the blowout victory over MCLA. Slisz then had a stellar final weekend of 2023, being named to the All-Tournament Team of the Smith Holiday Classic after averaging 20.5 points, three assists and five rebounds across two games. The junior guard started the weekend with 14 points, four assists and three rebounds against the No. 8 nationally-ranked Smith Pioneers before rounding out the weekend with 27 points on 52.6 percent shooting, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals against UMass Dartmouth.

Slisz and the Blue Jays open 2024 with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup at Norwich University on Saturday, January 6. Tipoff against the Cadets inside Andrews Hall in Northfield, Vt., is set for 3:00 p.m.

The New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) provides support for coaches from the New England Region. Membership in NEWBA is open to all Division III head coaches from the region who have a vested interest in the welfare of the organization.
