Women's Hoops Ends Season In GNAC Quarterfinals At Regis Wednesday

WESTON, Mass. - The fifth-seeded University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team fought hard despite playing in its second of back-to-back games in the postseason Wednesday night, but ultimately came up short of the prize, falling to the fourth-seeded Regis College Pride (REG), 68-50, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinal game at Higgins Court.

With the setback, the Blue Jays finish 15-11 overall on the season as the 2021-22 campaign comes to a close. It marks the best record for the Blue Jays spanning the previous 12 seasons since finishing 19-7 in 2010-11. USJ also broke its GNAC Tournament dry spell and won its first playoff game since February 2011, and hosted its first such game since 1998.

GAME INFORMATION
Score: #5 Saint Joseph 50, #4 Regis 68
Records: USJ (15-11), REG (13-8)

COACH QUOTE [Wendy Davis]
"I am disappointed we didn't play our best basketball tonight. I am proud of my four seniors -- Deanna De La Cruz, Silvana Barcomb, Cheyenne-Mone Smith and Lindsey Montminy. This program has grown under their leadership. We won zero conference games their freshman year, and 10 their senior year, so the program is trending in the right direction. Those four will be missed terribly. The bar has now been set higher with making the playoffs this year -- that now has to become the norm for USJ Women's Basketball."

Sophomore forward Jordan Ouellette (Bristol, Conn.), who was coming off a career-high 23 points in USJ's GNAC First Round win over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday night, was held to 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the floor on Wednesday night against the Pride. Senior forward Cheyenne-Mone Smith (Wethersfield, Conn.) left it all out on the court in her final career game, scoring six points, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out five assists, and recording five steals.

Saint Joseph struggled to stop the high-scoring duo of sophomore guard Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) and junior guard Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.), who combined for 37 of the 68 points for the Pride. Regis did its damage in the second and third quarters, outscoring the visitors, 31-12. USJ fought hard to get it under 20 but could not get it any closer as Regis maintained its momentum, playing the game to its pace from start to finish. USJ is now 7-8 all-time in the postseason and 0-1 against Regis.

As a team, the Pride shot 38.9 percent (28-for-72) from the field and 72.7 percent (8-for-11) from the free throw line. Each team committed 21 turnovers, with Regis scoring 17 points off Blue Jay miscues and USJ collecting 12 points off Regis errors.

UP NEXT
The season has concluded for the Blue Jays who finish 15-11 overall, their best record since going 19-7 in 2010-11. The squad has improved in the win column each season under four-year head coach Wendy Davis, and will look to continue the trend in 2022-23.
