Blue Jays Bully Badgers, Bounce Back With 79-52 Win

JOHNSON, Vt.— The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team bounced back with a 79-52 blowout win over Northern Vermont University-Johnson (NVUJ) Sunday afternoon, behind career-high performances from two freshmen, inside Carter Gymnasium in non-conference action.

Freshman forward Meredith Forman (Bristol, Conn.) scored a career-high 15 points off the bench (6-7 FG) to lead the way for the Blue Jays, who have already more than doubled their win total from a year ago. Freshman forward Madison McElroy (Colchester, Vt.) equaled Forman's effort with a career-high 10 points and five rebounds. McElroy has scored 30 points over the last four games. She scored just nine points in the first eight.

Sophomore forward Lindsey Montminy (Vernon, Conn.) had a team-high and season high 11 rebounds to go along with four points. Freshman guard Kiana Johnson (Chelsea, Vt.) was the only Badger in double-figures with 13. The Blue Jays turned a 10-point halftime lead into a 21 point route by the end of the third.

KEY MOMENTS

• The Blue Jays led by five two different times in the first quarter, but the Badgers were able to cut it to three, 14-11 after one, as Johnson beat the buzzer on a layup to close the quarter out.
• Saint Joseph opened up a double-digit lead with a 12-2 run to start the second. Free throws from Forman capped the run. USJ led 36-26 into the locker room.
• A 12-3 run blew the game wide open, as a Forman jump shot (which was falling all game) gave USJ its largest lead at the time, 48-29, with 6:05 to play in the third. USJ scored 20 or more points in the second third and fourth quarters.

• All 14 players scored for the Blue Jays.
• Saint Joseph forced numerous perimeter shots for NVUJ, who shot 3-for-29 from three (10%). The Blue Jays were 4-for-11 (36%).
• USJ held a sizeable margin in rebounds (49-33), second chance points (22-9) and points in the paint (40-24).

The Blue Jays are headed home for a matchup with Pratt on Thursday, January 9. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in the O'Connell Center. It marks their final game before Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play begins.
