Wildcats Spread The Wealth, Defeat Blue Jays 75-52

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) women's basketball team struggled to score from the get-go, and could not recover, ultimately falling to the Johnson & Wales University (JWU) Wildcats, 75-52, on Thursday night inside the Wildcat Center.

The Blue Jays (3-15, 0-5 GNAC) could not make it back-to-back wins, while the Wildcats (4-14, 3-2 GNAC) have won two of their last three. Senior center Ally Mishol (Longmeadow, Mass.) led all scorers with 21 points (7-9 FG, 5-6 3FG), six rebounds and three assists. Freshman guard Silvana Barcomb (Middletown, Conn.) had a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds. USJ shot just 19-for-65 on the night (29%), while JWU shot 28-for-61 (45%), including 9-of-17 from downtown. The Wildcats were plus 13 off the bench, and plus 12 in the rebounding department.

The Wildcats took control right away, their defense forcing the Blue Jays into difficult shots. Saint Joe's was held to 0-for-17 shooting in the first quarter, while Mishol flat-out dominated the opening 10 minutes, scoring 13 of the Wildcats' 17 points. JWU led after one, 17-6.

USJ wouldn't give up, and played a solid second quarter on both ends. A 9-4 run trimmed the lead to six, 21-15, with 4:02 to play before the intermission. Barcomb broke free for a layup to cut it down. USJ would play good team defense the next few minutes, neither team able to score. The Wildcats finally took control into the locker room, ending the quarter on an 8-3 run to push the lead back to 11, 29-18, at halftime.

Sophomore guard Raelynn Voislow (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and Barcomb did what they could to keep it close in the second half, the lead still at 11 midway through the third, 40-29. It would be all Wildcats from there though, as a 15-8 run pushed the lead up to 18, 55-37, heading into the fourth quarter.

JWU would maintain a consistent 20-point lead to the end, their unselfish play too much for the Blue Jays this time around. The Wildcats assisted on 19 of 28 shots.
