Basketball Gives Trinity a Battle in 69-59 Game

HARTFORD, Conn. – Sophomore forward Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the University of Saint Joseph, but the Blue Jays dropped a 69-59 basketball game at Trinity College Tuesday night in a non-conference game in Hartford.

Trinity, which snapped a six-game losing streak, is 10-7 overall. USJ is 2-18.

Guest shot 10-for-21 from the floor and was the game's high scorer. Sophomore Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) added 11 points for the Blue Jays.

Trinity trailed for just 35 seconds early in the game and led 15-10 after one quarter and 39-24 at halftime. But the Blue Jays stayed in contention throughout. USJ was able to get within eight points on several occasions in the second half, the last time at 55-47 with 6:33 to play on a Guest free throw. But Trinity scored on its next three possessions to re-establish a 13-point lead and the Bantams secured the win.

Senior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) led the Bantams with 21 points and 17 rebounds while junior guard Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) added 16 points.

USJ shot 25-for-64 (39.1 percent) from the floor to 24-for-60 (40.0 percent) for Trinity and outscored the Bantams 50-49 there. But Trinity went 20-for-29 at the free throw line to 9 of 14 for USJ.

St. Joseph hosts Emmanuel, Saturday, Feb. 6 in a Great Northeast Athetic Conference game at 1 p.m.
