Wentworth Comes Back in Fourth

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Wentworth women's basketball team used a 13-0, fourth-quarter run as a springboard to a 66-62 win over the University of Saint Joseph Thursday night at the O'Connell Center in a non-conference game.

Wentworth improved to 6-10 overall; USJ is 1-15.

Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) led the Blue Jays with her second double-double of the season, putting up 21 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Stephanie DeJesus (Meriden, Conn.) scored 17 points for USJ. Carlee Putnam (Niantic, Conn.) had 11 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Jays and Rajeen Mayo (Middletown, Conn.) had 11 points, eight assists, six rebounds and four stelas.

Wentworth had a pair of double-doubles as Carly Rogers (Scarborough, Maine) had 18 points and 13 rebounds and Rachael Camara (Fall River, Mass.) had 22 points and 11 rebounds to go with five assists. Megan McLaughlin (Southington, Conn.) had 11 points and six assists for the Leopards. 

USJ led much of the game including 14-8 after the first quarter, in which Wentworth shot 1-for-18 from the floor. The Blue Jays led 36-31 at halftime and 52-46 through three.

The Blue Jays led 56-48 with 8:31 to play after a layup from Mayo before Wentworth scored 13 unanswered points. McLaughlin capped the run with a three-pointer to put the Leopards ahead 61-56 with 3:14 left. Camara scored six points and Rogers four in the run.

DeJesus hit a three-pointer to pull USJ within 61-59 with 1:53 remaining, but that's as the Blue Jays would get. 

USJ is at Anna Maria Saturday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game.
