Basketball Stays Close to Simmons

BOSTON, Mass. – University of Saint Joseph junior Carlee Putnam (East Lyme, Conn.) scored 18 points and blocked three shots in playing all 40 minutes in the Blue Jays 64-51 loss Monday at Simmons in a Great Northeast Athletic game.

Simmons improved to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in the GNAC. USJ is 1-14 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Kayla Guest (Newington, Conn.) had 13 points and nine rebounds for USJ. Stephanie DeJesus (Meriden, Conn.) scored 12 points for the Blue Jays and Elisha Pertillar (Windsor, Conn.) had 10 rebounds.

USJ had more points off turnovers (11-8), more second-chance points on the offensive boards (14-8), but Simmons had a big edge inside, 30-18 on points in the paint, Simmons led 23-18 at the end of the first quarter and 40-25 at halftime.

Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) led Simmons with 14 points and nine rebounds.

USJ hosts Wentworth in a non-conference game, Thursday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
