Basketball Tops Mitchell, 84-66

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior guard Brianna Ferraro (Waterbury, Conn.) scored a career-high 22 points and junior forward Heather Framski (Prospect, Conn.) had a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds as the University of Saint Joseph basketball team defeated Mitchel College 84-66 Thursday in a non-conference game.

USJ improved to 3-1 overall; Mitchell is 0-3.

Ferraro shot 9-for-16 from the floor, made three three-pointers and two free throws and also had five assists and three steals. Framski was 7-for-14 from the floor, while Mary Hyde (Derby, Conn.) scored 16 points and Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, Conn.) had 12. Framski had three blocks and three steals to go with her double-double. Hyde and Ferraro each handed out five assists and added three steals.

The game was tied at 11-11 at the 12:47 mark before the Blue Jays took the lead for good behind a 12-1 run. Both Framski and Ferraro each had a pair of buckets over the two-minute stretch while Mitchell turned the ball over five times and failed to attempt a shot from the field.

St. Joseph led by as many as 18 points in the half and took a 47-30 lead into halftime. Framski had 16 points at the break to pace the Blue Jays, who shot 50 percent from the floor and went 5-for-11 from long range.

The Blue Jays never let the lead dip below 16 points in the second half en route to its third win of the season. The Blue Jays finished with a 29-11 edge in points off turnovers (USJ forced 36 turnovers) and saw their bench outscore Mitchell's by a 17-2 margin.

Sophomore Amanda Garcia (New Britain, Conn.) led Mitchell with 20 points and added eight rebounds and four steals. Three Mariners – senior Kate Mulloy (Gardner, Mass.), sophomore Savannah Boyle (Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Caycee Williams (Torrington, Conn.) – finished with double-doubles in the contest. Williams had 17 points and 11 rebounds, Boyle had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Mulloy chipped in with 10 points, 10 boards and a game-high six assists. The four players had all but three of Mitchell's total points.

St. Joseph returns to action at Connecticut College Saturday, November 23 at 2 p.m.
