
Softball Extends Winning Streak to Six, Sweeps Road GNAC Doubleheader at Regis
WESTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) softball team extended its winning streak to six games, sweeping a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) South Division doubleheader against Regis College (Regis), Thursday night at the Regis Softball Field in Weston, Mass. The Blue Jays won the opening game, 11-2, before completing the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the night cap. The six-game winning streak is the longest for the Blue Jays since the 2023 campaign, when the team also won six consecutive games. With the results, the Blue Jays improve to 13-10 overall, 6-2 in GNAC play, and 6-2 in the South Division, while the Pride drop to 8-14 overall, 2-6 in the GNAC and 2-4 in the South Division.
GAME ONE: USJ 11, REGIS 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blue Jays wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as freshman outfielder Gabby Marichal (Lynn, Mass.) ripped a two-out double to left field, plating junior outfielder Kaitlyn Ouellette (Wolcott, Conn.) and establishing a 1-0 lead.
- In the very next at-bat, freshman outfielder Lorynes Suriel (Lynn, Mass.) launched a two-run single to center field, increasing the gap to 3-0 after the top of the first.
- The USJ run parade continued in the top of the second, as sophomore infielder Jennifer Antonowicz (Wolcott, Conn.) slashed an RBI single through the left side, increasing the gap to 4-0.
- Senior first baseman Alyssa Roberts (Naugatuck, Conn.) continued the offensive surge with an RBI single two batters later, extending the lead to 5-0 through two innings.
- USJ tacked on another run in the top of the fourth, as Roberts launched a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring senior shortstop Jenna Zup (Berlin, Conn.) to increase the advantage to 6-0.
- Regis managed to break the shutout in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one run to cut the USJ lead to 6-1.
- The Blue Jays quickly answered the Pride's run in the top of the sixth, as Ouellette slashed an RBI single to straight center, reestablishing a six-run lead, 7-1.
- In the next at-bat, USJ plated two runs on an error by Regis' second baseman, extending the advantage to 9-1.
- Regis tallied another run in the bottom of the sixth, but Antonowicz responded with a two-RBI double in the top of the seventh, increasing the USJ edge to 11-2.
- Junior pitcher Paige Fekete (Watertown, Conn.) sealed the win by retiring the Pride in order in the bottom of the seventh while tossing her 100th career strikeout to secure the victory for USJ in game one, 11-2.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Antonowicz paced the team with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate, racking up three RBI.
- Zup also had a multi-hit game, tallying two hits while drawing a team-best two walks.
- Zup also scored a team-high four runs.
- Antonowicz, Marichal and Suriel all stole one base in the opener.
- Fekete earned the complete game victory (2-3), allowing two runs, one of which was earned, off seven hits, while throwing one strikeout.
GAME TWO: USJ 7, REGIS 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game started as a pitcher's duel, as Roberts battled with the Pride's starting hurler to keep the game scoreless through the first two innings.
- Ouellette broke the deadlock in the top of the third, notching a two-out RBI single, plating Antonowicz and establishing a 1-0 edge.
- Two batters later, Suriel recorded an RBI single through the left side, before Marichal followed suit with a two-RBI single, increasing the lead to 4-0.
- The Pride answered back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring one run to close the gap to three, 4-1, after three innings.
- USJ fired back in the top of the fifth, as Marichal launched a bases loaded single to left field, while the ball rolled past the Regis left fielder, enabling the bases to clear and extend the USJ advantage to 7-1.
- The Pride were able to score one run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough, as Roberts shut the door in the bottom of the seventh, securing the win for USJ, 7-2, and the sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Roberts paced the team with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate in game two.
- Zup, Ouellette and Marichal also recorded multi-hit games.
- Marichal posted a game-high three RBI.
- Roberts earned the complete-game victory (5-3) after allowing two runs, one of which was earned, off nine hits and tossing three strikeouts.
UP NEXT
The Blue Jays return home to kickstart a six-game homestand, starting with a GNAC South Division doubleheader against Dean College on Sunday, April 13. First pitch of game one against the Bulldogs at the USJ Softball Field in West Hartford, Conn., is slated for noon.
